 The date for the local body elections is likely to be announced today.  The State Election Commission may announce the dates at a press conference today.  It is also likely that the local body elections will be held in two phases.

 Municipal and municipal elections will be held in the first phase and district and taluka panchayat elections will be held in the second phase.  The counting of votes will be done simultaneously in this election which will be held in two phases.  Political parties are also busy formulating strategies for local body elections.  Earlier, a non-disclosure petition was filed in the Gujarat High Court seeking that the Election Commission announce the issue of holding local body elections on ballot paper.  Petitioner Imtiaz Khan Pathan, his advocate K.  R.  The petition was filed in the Gujarat High Court through Koshti.  The non-disclosure petition alleges that in response to the RTI filed by the petitioner, the state Election Commission stated that it did not have a VVPAT machine.  In the absence of a VVPAT machine, the State Election Commission announces the issue of holding local body elections on ballot paper.




 The petitioner also made a written representation to the State Election Commission on 1 January 2021 on the issue.  To date, however, no response has been claimed.  The petitioner has sought directions from the State Election Commission to submit a status report before the Gujarat High Court on the issue.  The petitioner has also cited the judgment of the Central Election Commission in the PIL case against Subramaniam Swamy.

The counting of votes is likely to be done together
The crucial local body elections ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections could be held in February or March next year. According to official sources, the local body elections will be held in two phases and counting of votes is likely to be done simultaneously. Municipal and municipal elections will be held in the first phase, while panchayat elections will be held in the second phase, in which preparations to be made keeping in view the situation of Kovid, police staff, polling stations, election staff etc. were discussed.
