 Janmashtami 2022: Traditional dishes that are offered to Lord Krishna on this auspicious day




Janmashtami and food have a unique relationship and that can be seen every year on this auspicious day that marks the birth of Lord Krishna. On this day, there are a few signature preparations that are offered to Lord Krishna, keeping his love for milk and milk products in mind. Here we have listed 10 famous dishes that are offered to him during the midnight celebration of the festival. Interestingly, these dishes have been proved to be good for the human body as they keep the gut at ease after the full day fasting.


register – Panjiri is  contemlet to be the most important offering of this festival. This healthy prasad made of coriander powder, sugar powder, desi ghee, cashew nuts, almonds, pistachios, sugar candy and raisins is considered good for the stomach. It is  famuose in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Punjab region of the country.




Kheer – This dessert is made with milk, dry fruits, rice, sago or makhana. Cardamom and saffron are also used in it for taste. Considered delicious, this sweet is offered to Lord Krishna on the midnight of Janmashtami as a part of ‘Chhapan Bhog’.



Butter, sugar- This prasad is considered to be the favorite of Lord Krishna. Homemade fresh butter, sugar candy or sugar, this simple dish can be made easily at home.




Honey with milk Janmashtami worship is incomplete without a holy drink made of milk and honey. It is offered to Lord Krishna and then distributed among the devotees.




Gopalkala – This famous and simple dish is made from flattened rice, cucumber, coconut, curd, ghee, sugar and roasted cumin. After mixing all the ingredients, these are shaped into laddus and offered to Lord Krishna during the midnight rituals.




Makhana Pag – Makhana Paag is a special dish made on the eve of Janmashtami and it is prepared using Makhana, milk, ghee and powdered sugar. Kids like this sweet dish with crunchy taste.



Charanamrit – Charanamrit is used to bathe Lord Krishna in the midnight ceremony. This mixture is made from fresh milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar/jaggery, basil leaves and makhana. After the rituals are over at midnight, this charanamrit is distributed among the devotees in the form of prasad.




Rava Laddu – These healthy and nutritious laddus are made from roasted rava, grated coconut, dry fruits and nuts, sugar and lots of ghee. Ghee and butter are believed to be dear to Lord Krishna.


Sabudana Khichdi – This light dish is made with soaked sago, green chillies, peanuts, rock salt, tomatoes and ghee. It is considered as a healthy snack dish. Sabudana Khichdi is loaded with carbohydrates which give you instant energy after completing your fast.
