Too much homework. (How does one feel after just reading those words?) Researchers from the Stanford grad school of Education, Lewis and Clark College and Villanova University conducted a study in high schoolers living in high-income, high-achieving communities and located that spending an excessive amount of time on homework could have negative effects on students' health and well-being.

The researchers engaged with 4,317 participants in 10 California high schools through surveys and interviews. Students had a mean of three .1 hours of homework each night. As Stanford News reports, the study cites earlier work that found 90 minutes to two-and-a-half hours of nightly homework to be optimal for top schoolers.

Stanford research shows pitfalls of homework

A Stanford researcher found that students in high-achieving communities who spend an excessive amount of time on homework experience more stress, physical health problems, a scarcity of balance and even alienation from society. quite two hours of homework an evening could also be counterproductive, consistent with the study.

A Stanford researcher found that an excessive amount of homework can negatively affect kids, especially their lives faraway from school, where family, friends and activities matter.

"Our findings on the consequences of homework challenge the normal assumption that homework is inherently good," wrote Denise Pope, a senior lecturer at the Stanford grad school of Education and a co-author of a study published within the Journal of Experimental Education.

Why develop learning output?

“Students already know that they want a degree. The challenge is to help students become more purposeful about the types of learning and accomplishments that the degree represents. "

Learning outcomes are valuable to learners, instructors and administrators. Mark Bettersby (1999) of the Learning Outcomes Network explains that the results of a study are more than just a few sentences attached to current lesson plans or curricula; Instead, the development of learning outcomes and the shape of instruction can increase their use within the unit of teaching and assessment activities and students ’engagement and learning.

Due to their ability to benefit many groups in subsequent learning, the development of learning outcomes has become a growing priority for instructors and institutions over the past decade. Focusing on integrated, generalized and transferable skills meets the contemporary demand on graduates and lays the foundation for lifelong learning. As government and public attention to higher education products grows, the results of education help define the goals and essential aspects of higher education, for students and the general public, in the institution.

For students

By focusing on the use of knowledge and skills learned in a course and the integration of knowledge and skills with other areas of their lives, students are more engaged with their study and curriculum content.

Emphasis on integration and general skills helps students to make connections between the curriculum and other types of curriculum and knowledge, which increases student engagement.

The researchers used survey data to look at perceptions about homework, student well-being and behavioral engagement during a sample of 4,317 students from 10 high-performing high schools in upper-middle-class California communities. along side the survey data, Pope and her colleagues used open-ended answers to explore the students' views on homework.

Median household income exceeded $90,000 in these communities, and 93 percent of the scholars went on to school , either two-year or four-year.

Students in these schools average about 3.1 hours of homework each night.

Homework is a crucial a part of engaging students outside of the classroom.

It carries educational benefits for all age groups, including time management and organization. Homework also provides students with the power to think beyond what's taught in school .

The not-so-good news is these benefits only occur when students are engaged and prepared to find out . But, the more homework they get, the less they need to interact .

Homework can affect students’ health, social life and grades. The hours logged in school , and therefore the hours logged on schoolwork can cause students feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated. Navigating the road between developing learning skills and feeling frustrated are often tricky.

Homework is a crucial a part of being successful inside and out of doors of the classroom, but an excessive amount of of it can even have the other effect. Students who spend an excessive amount of time on homework aren't always ready to meet other needs, like being physically and socially active. Ultimately, the quantity of homework a student has can impact tons quite his or her grades.

HOW DOES HOMEWORK AFFECT STUDENTS’ HEALTH?

Homework can affect both students’ physical and psychological state . consistent with a study by Stanford University , 56 per cent of scholars considered homework a primary source of stress. an excessive amount of homework may result in lack of sleep, headaches, exhaustion and weight loss. Excessive homework also can end in poor eating habits, with families choosing nutriment as a faster alternative.

The big jump underscores the growing popularity of online coursework, particularly from prestige education brands. Harvard doesn't yet offer any degree programs like many other business schools (see the simplest Online MBA Programs Of 2019), but it does have a good portfolio of digital courses in everything from Business Analytics and Entrepreneurship Essentials to Disruptive Strategy and Economics for Managers.

The news of the fast growth was revealed in an interview HBS Dean Nitin Nohria did with the scholar newspaper, The Harvard Crimson. “The impact [of the rebranding] has been immediate,” Nohria told the Crimson. “We’ve seen a 40 to 50 percent rise in applications already. It’s been literally a step change within the number of individuals who can now find us and thru that are applying.

“Most people didn't know that HBX was actually related to Harvard graduate school ,” added Nohria. “We said, ‘You know, we’re pleased with it, so why should we not put our name on an academic experience we are proud of?’”

More than an easy name change, however, Harvard graduate school Online also released with its rebranding a 3rd party survey of highly impressive career outcomes for college kids who have taken its digital courses. The survey of nearly 1,000 graduates of its online courses found that one in four said they need received a promotion or a title change as a results of the HBX course they completed

Harvard’s graduate school launched its first online courses in 2013 during a unit it called HBX. That was at the peak of the excitement around MOOCs, and a few year after the beginning of edX, the web course platform founded by Harvard and MIT. At the time it seemed a bandwagon filled with elite colleges were starting courses that led to “X,” making the entire trend feel a touch like an experimental trial (and one which may not last).

“Whether or not the case method can work online may be a question that we haven’t answered yet,” Brian C. Kenny, a spokesperson for what was then HBX, told The Chronicle of upper Education back in 2013. He was pertaining to the business school’s well-known pedagogics that uses “case studies,” which the varsity produces and sells also .

In renaming the web program, Harvard graduate school is signaling that it'll still offer courses and certificates online while attempting to line itself aside from X-ending MOOC providers. So far, 40,000 people from round the world have completed a course at what was called HBX in subjects that include “Entrepreneurship Essentials” and “Financial Accounting.”

And officials means now that online offerings became mainstream, the name HBX was causing confusion, obscuring the program’s biggest marketing point—being a neighborhood of Harvard.

Harvard’s graduate school still has no plans to supply a full business degree online, said Patrick Mullane, executive of Harvard graduate school Online, in an interview. the sole thanks to get that at Harvard is face to face .

Learning Outcomes are statements that describe the knowledge or skills that students have acquired by the end of a particular assignment, class, course or program and help students understand why that knowledge and skills will be useful to them. They focus on the context and potential applications of knowledge and skills, help students integrate learning into a variety of contexts, and help guide assessment and evaluation.

Good learning outcomes emphasize the application and integration of knowledge. Instead of focusing on content coverage, learning outcomes clarify how students will be able to work out the content, in a classroom context and more broadly.

Example of learning outcomes::

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the political, religious, economic, and social uses of art in Italy during the Renaissance
  • Identify the range of art and works of artists
  • Analyze the role of art and artist in Italy at this time
  • Analyze the art of the period according to objective methods
  • Combine different materials and types of art with the trends and values of that period
  • Evaluate and defend their response to a range of art historical issues
  • For more examples of learning outcomes, please see Appendix

Why develop learning output?

“Students already know that they want a degree. The challenge is to help students become more purposeful about the types of learning and accomplishments that the degree represents. "

College Learning for the New Global Century, AAC and U, p. 29
